HUMAN + HOUND
Amanda + Ollie
As the voice behind fitness blog ShapinUp.com, Amanda Shapin posts about all things health, wellness and fitness related - and of course about her four-legged training partner Ollie. When she's not blogging, teaching cycling classes at Equinox, or working her day job at Seventeen Magazine, this busy triathlete & marathoner and her adorable rescue pup can be found exploring their favorite neighborhood destination - Central Park. DOG & CO. spends a day trying to keep up with these fit friends as they take us along for one of their runs, with Ollie looking fitness fab in workout-worthy gear from WILDEBEEST.
WHO IS THE SPECIAL PUP IN YOUR LIFE?
The special pup in my life Ollie! He’s a rescue and I’m not quite sure what his breed is but if I had to guess I’d say Westie and Schnauzer and I think he is about 4 years old.
WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GO TOGETHER?
Ollie loves going for walks and runs in Central Park. We’ve also taken him on a few hikes outside of the city and he is a true mountain dog; he leads the way and races up the trail.
WHEN - and HOW - DID YOU FIRST MEET OLLIE?
My boyfriend Matt and I had been talking about getting a dog for a really long time. Neither of us ever had a dog so while we wanted one, we were nervous. After talking about it for two years, we decided it was time to at least start looking. Animal Care & Control was hosting a mobile adoption so we stopped by just to see who was there.
At the adoption event there were a bunch of dogs outside playing but we spotted Ollie (at the time named Rain) still in a crate on the bus. We asked about him and they brought him out for us to meet. He was extremely shy, quiet and sweet. We could tell he was cute but he was a total mess, covered in matted hair. They didn’t know anything about him except that he was wandering the streets of the Bronx and had been picked up by the police and brought to the shelter 10 days earlier. They didn’t know if he was trained, what kind of dog he was, really anything, except that he was a sweet pup. We played with him for about an hour, debating if we were actually ready to get a dog.
We thought about leaving, giving it more thought and coming back later but realized that if we left and he wasn’t still there when we returned, we would be devastated. Despite being very nervous about getting a dog, we made the leap! We adopted Ollie and then immediately went into a pet store and said “we have this dog...what do we do??” We’ve had Ollie for almost a year now and making him a part of our family was the best decision we’ve ever made.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT OLLIE?
Ollie is so sweet, friendly and playful and seems to be smiling all the time. I love how happy he makes us and also everyone he meets. It’s so fun walking down the streets in NYC where it’s quite common that people are frowning, going about their business...but when they spot Ollie a smile comes to their face.
"When Ollie gets really excited, he jumps on all four legs at the same time. Between that and his amazing ears, he looks like a bunny rabbit!"
WHY IS OLLIE YOUR BEST FRIEND?
Ollie is my best friend because he is a loyal sidekick, keeps me company and loves to cuddle. Whether I’m going for a jog in the park or laying around the apartment, he is right by my side. I did an Ironman 70.3 earlier this summer and Matt and Ollie cheered for me for over 6 hours! He has brought so much love to my life. Having never had a dog, I couldn’t imagine how much I’d love this little furball.
