B E S T Friends
Tyler (Architect) + Raul (English Bulldog)
Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY
After serving 8 years in the US Marine Corps, Architect Tyler Jorgenson found & fell in love with surfing. It didn't take long for Tyler to start crafting his own boards, and shortly after he found himself taking orders from friends & family, Wax / Surf Co. was born. Handcrafting surfboards in their Williamsburg shop from start to finish, Tyler and his (human) partner are also assisted by his faithful friend Raul the English Bulldog. Spend an afternoon with this cool crew as they build some boards and take a stroll around their Brooklyn block.
Q. WHO is the special pup in your life?
A. Raul! He's a 1 1/2 year old English Bulldog.
Q. WHEN (and how) did you first meet Raul?
A. We met Raul when we picked him up from our breeder in Maryland when he was only 8 weeks old. We thought he was going to be huge since his head was so big in all the photos we received but we were surprised to find that he was no bigger than a water bottle at 5 pounds.
"In and out of the Middle East and other deployments, I was able to get my architecture degree. Upon graduating and getting out of the service, I moved to NYC looking for a big city architecture job. I found that - but I also found surfing."
"My business partner Michael Farley and I surf all over the area, from spots in NJ to Rockaway and as far north as Montauk. The majority of our clients are also surfing these same places, so we can definitely relate."
Q. WHERE is your favorite place to go with Raul?
A. The Williamsburg waterfront is Raul's favorite spot before and after work because he can run freely with other dogs off leash. Lucky Dog (the bar) is another favorite...we can't walk by that bar without Raul throwing a huge fit about going in.
"We've had to start keeping a back up remote control in the house because Raul has chewed through 2 of them already. We are half way through our 3rd and our 4th one is ready to roll when he finally destroys it. No matter where we hide it or try to put it out of his reach, he always manages to hunt it down and sink his teeth into it."
Q. WHAT is the best thing about Raul?
A. Raul is a true bulldog in the sense that he is tenacious and never gives up. From getting us to play tug of war with him to always choosing the biggest dog at the park to chase after, he never gives up and takes everything on at full force. I've tried pass on my Marine Corps training to him as best as I can, although sometimes he would rather just take naps! Bulldogs are the USMC mascot, after all!
Q. WHY is Raul your B E S T Friend?
A. Raul is my best friend because no matter what I'm doing, it's always the most interesting thing in the world to him. When you see his little body wiggle when you walk in the door after work, you know how excited he is to see you and how much he's been looking forward to hanging out with you all day.
